This week's breakfast salad routine was nearly brought to a halt as I stared into the depths of a fridge shockingly devoid of eggs a couple hours ago. Hurrah for wonderful friends who insist you take the last piece of chicken home from Zuni and incidentally save breakfast! And hurrah for those memorable dinners and the company too. (Salad: romaine, avocado and a creamy dressing built from leftover quark, lemon, garlic, and parsley). A picnic in a secret park was the perfect reason to dive into @wednesdaychef's recipe for Russischer Zupfkuchen (Chocolate Quark Cheesecake). Reminiscent of a ricotta cheesecake in its lightness, and surrounded by a cozy chocolate cookie crust - this was an utter delight to bake and eat. Note to bakers: when Luisa says to scatter the remaining pieces of dough over the surface of the filling, don't decide you can make it prettier with a lattice top. Luisa knows best, trust me... and this photo. 🤓 Today I am working to adapt to a new reality: one that means I could bake this cake right here at 1 pm on a Wednesday. To sink my feet back into clogs, my nose back into books, and myself back into classrooms after being immersed in the thrilling world of San Francisco food publicity is bittersweet for sure, but I'm looking forward to this next adventure!

P.S. Last Wednesday evening I threw together this little number: a fragrant earl grey-infused version of @turshen's Afternoon Cake, with pockets of homemade rhubarb compote to perk things up and @communitygrains whole wheat flour to elevate that nutrient factor so we could all have a couple slices. It's pretty lucky when friends' birthday cake preferences align with your must-make list. Yesterday's Swedish Princess Cake (aka Prinsesstårta) was a perfect example. Adventures included: slicing a genoise sponge into 3 even layers + making pastry cream and green marzipan and marzipan roses + assembling this tower of goodness. 💪 All my salads this week were little edible frames for crazy beautiful eggs from @riverdogfarm. They are the kind of eggs that make me ask questions like "Why don't I buy eggs at the Berkeley farmer's market regularly?" and lead to deeper questions about life, the universe and everything. . .
Much thanks to @riverdogfarm for the eggs and lettuces, @happyboyfarms for the perfect spring radishes, good old Monterey Market for Japanese sweet potatoes and avocados, and @oaktownspice for keeping things well peppered.
